Good morning to all my wonderful friends in cyberspace. Amazing that technology has come so far in so little of time. I remember watching the "Jetsons" as a child and seeing the things we have today and thought that was only make believe. I never thought it would happen in my lifetime. But here it is. At the press of a button, your thoughts words and ideas can be viewed all over the world. The other thing that amazes me is the speed in which it is happening. Each day the advancements are increasingly faster and faster.
I began to think about the past versus the present and there are a great many changes, not only in the physical world, but in the world of words as well.
I had a conversation one day with my granddaughter as we were driving into town and she was texting away. (I was the driver...so that no one thinks SHE was texting and driving). Anyway, I stared over at her and thought about how far things have come with the telephone and began to tell her about when I was a young girl and we were lucky to have ONE phone and that was in the house. And to boot, the phone had a PARTY LINE. She just lifted her head from her texting position and asked how you could have a party on the phone???? Although the difference lies both ways. One day she called and we were talking about school. I asked her what she was taking that sememster and she told me one of the things was "KEYBOARDING" I was confused...I said to her "I thought you played the trombone,...what made you change or did you just add on another instrument?" Her reply was "Grandma...keyboading is how to use the computer keys" and of couse my logical response was..."Oh, so you are taking TYPING!" Her next response was "TYPING? What's that?" These are the conversations that has made me want to put together a new program called LITTLE READ WRITING HOOD. The use of words from the old into the new world. I mean my goodness...one day while I was shopping I fould a texting manual. Really? You need to have a manual for texting...well, maybe I do!! This poses another thought for me. I know that many from my era have trouble spelling....what will it do to the generations to come?
Anyway... the new word for the day is MOUSE.
Mouse to me was that small little creature that runs around in the field, eats cheese and causes grown peole to panic! It is the topic of a song that todays in no longer politically correct, because the Phoo Phoo picks up the field mouse and pops them on the head. Really??? Todays generation has, in my mind gone a little over the top with this politically correct business. It is the same generation that does some pretty unimaginable and questionable things in my head! Anyway, I am not here to pass judgement. In my head it was just a song. There a stories galore written about mice. 3 Blind mice...oops that might be another one of those unfit songs. Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house...not a creature was stirring not even a mouse. And there is the story of the country couse and the city mouse. I could go on and on.
Then there is the mouse on the computer....Why was it named that? Perhaps because the original had the somewhat shape of the animal called a mouse? A tail, and it runs around? Would a modern mouse trap be what causes the computer mouse to stop working and just freeze? Now with laptops and I Pads would the internal mouse be called the housepet?
Crazy word changes. My question is...could no one come up with a new word for this computer gadget. Would anyone have ever questioned a new word? After all...who came up with the word Computer?
Well, there you have my word for the day. Does it make you wonder how this will fit into the story at the end of the month.
Here is a challenge for the day for all my friends in cyberspace. Send me words that have been reused/recycled. Words like I have fore mentioned. I would love to hear them. Have a great day.
