Worldly Word Feb 6

Good morning everyone.  What a beautiful, sun shining morning it is here in Niles, Il.  The sun is so brightly shining into my living room that  I needed to adjust my sitting space so that I could see the computer properly.  I started to think about Valentine's Day.  Next week already!  I hope that everyone is doing something special that day, whether it is for someone else or even for yourself.  That is the day that many will speak their love with words and actions.  It is the time for sharing hearts.  It makes me remember the excitement as a child in school.  Hey....let's make today's word REMEMBER!
I REMEMBER that in the first week of February, back in my day...in school, we would build the Valentine's Day Mailbox.  Anyone else do this?  It would stay in the classroom for everyone to put their Valentine's Day card in so that at the party on Valentine's Day, the postmaster,...someone chosen by the teacher would distribute the cards.  I can REMEMBER sitting and watching everyone's desk....who would get the most Valentines?
I REMEMBER the old sayings on the cards..I think later on, when we graduated, some of those saying were used when we signed autograph books.  REMEMBER those?  Do they still have them?  REMEMBER..."Never 2 Be forgotten?"  REMEMBER making your first "real" Valentine for that someone special?  The doilies, the lace, buttons and bows enveloped us like a warm winter's fire.  The special thoughts that were enclosed into those precious cards.  The hopes and dreams of young girls and boys who dreamed of that special someone who might just become  their Valentine.
This year will be the very first time that I am being taken out for Valentine's Day.  I am looking  forward to the night as a night to REMEMBER.
That word....REMEMBER...to lock away something special somewhere deep inside yourself.  REMEMBER must be a Valentine's day word...don't you think?  Lock and key seems to be appropriate for the day. The key to your heart.  Lockets are given as gifts.  Kisses of all sorts are always appropriate.  I REMEMBER when my children were young, I would make giant Rice Krispie treats and mold them to look like the Hershey kiss.  I would wrap it in foil and trailing from the top would be the note that I would write with some loving statement to each of them.  Then I would hide it in the schoolbags.  The boxes of heart shaped chocolates would get hidden in my husbands car or schoolbag....when he was a teacher.
When I look back and REMEMBER how much fun that was, I am sorry that today has become so commercial.  It is just an expectation that we do something on Valentine's Day.  It is so easy to send a ready made card or hop on the ecard sites and push a couple of buttons.  Funny how placing buttons on a Valentine's Day card got replaced by pushing a button.  How easy it is today to just push that delete button when we are done reading the card instead of placing it in our drawer.  I think I would like to REMEMBER it the old way.  REMEMBER the hearts that came from the heart.  What do you REMEMBER?  What will you do to someone to REMEMBER you this Valentine's Day?
Quote for the day:

Enjoy reading your blog. Brings back memories when I was young. We both grew up around the same time frame I guess, so I can relate to many of your childhood memories also. I would go back to those days in a heart beat, even if it was for only a day. Maybe to look up old friends, neighbors, past loves. Wouldn't it be great?

Dear Jim, Wouldn't that be nice to be able to go back! I occasionally go back and revisit places from my childhood...sometimes to discover they are no longer there. But the memories still linger on. Sometimes, those memories can tell an amazing story for us to leave as our heritage. For others to know and learn. We are all the best books in town. Thanks for commenting...where did you grow up?
