S'more of That This Season

Good morning to all my readers.  Hope that if you live in this area that you are keeping warm.  The chill is here and snowy rain expected to arrive this afternoon.  That makes me think of campfires and snuggling.
As for campfires...I don't know why, but I do associate it always with chocolate.  Hot chocolate with floating marshmallows seem to be connected to the thought of sitting by a campfire.  Not to mention those delectable chocolate and marshmallow and graham cracker smores.  Made me think about when that all started. 
I seems that he very first printed record of the recipe was in 1927 in a girl scout's manual entitled, "Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts".  S'mores original name was actually "some more", because of the constant requests for more and then it was  later shortened to simply "s'more". It is thought  that this new word was perhaps born from sticky mouthed individuals who may have been unable to properly say, "some more, please" . I am surprised that the Girl scouts didn't come up with a cookie with those ingredients. 
When we look at the ingredients....don't you wonder where they came from?
Well the marsh mellow far beats the s'more in an age because it is  over 4,000 years old. It was first discovered in  Egypt by squeezing a mallow plant and was reserved only for gods and royalty, however it didn't receive it's more common appearance until the 1800's.  It so happened the some French candy makers whipped the plant extract into egg whites and sugar to make medicine. Marshmallows originally were used to treat sore throats, suppress coughs and help heal minor cuts and burns, but it  became so popular that they need to find a faster way to make them. Unfortunately this method also put an end to the use of actual mallow, the plant in marshmallows, and resulted in the modern recipe of corn syrup, corn starch, sugar, and gelatin. Marshmallows no longer have any medical use, but Americans still purchase more than 95 million pounds per year.
As for the Graham cracker's history ,  Sylvester Graham  created the cookie in 1829. Graham created the cookie as part of a vegetarian diet as a high fiber, slightly sweet cracker made with whole, unrefined wheat flour. 
And then there is the beloved chocolate  bar  which has a rich history dating all the  back to it's sister ingredient the marshmallow's time more than 4,000 years ago in 2000 B.C. Chocolate originated in the amazon and has been used all throughout history by almost every culture ever known at some point in time. In Spain it was once even used for money. It was made into an actual candy bar in the year 1847, when  a man named Joseph Fry created a paste from chocolate that could be pressed into a mold.  Today it is claimed that Chocolate DOES have medical uses. Harvard's school of medical health claims that
a few pieces of chocolate a month can actually lengthen your life! Chocolate is also high in antioxidants and essential minerals such as iron and copper.    I do think that for most of us today associate chocolate though with Herseys. 
And in case you might not have known this piece of trivia...National S"mores Day is celebrated on August 10th each year.  I myself think it should be sometime in fall because when I think of S'more making...I think of fall.
There are more and more recipes now surfacing using those basic ingredients. From cheesecakes to waffles sandwiches to fudges and muffins and martinits. I am sure that the Girl Scouts never imagined what would have become of their simple fireside snack.
